The racial make up is 51.5% White, 33.0% Black, 8.8% Asian, 3.6% Hispanic, 2.7% Multiracial, and 0.2% American Indian. The ethnic makeup of South Philadelphia is 21.5% Italian-American, 19.4%
Irish-American, 9.4% German-American, and 5.1% Polish-American.
There is also a large presence of Vietnamese, Dominican Republic,
Mexico, and Russian-American immigrants. A 2005 census estimation states that the Asian percentage may have risen to almost 20% in only five years. Almost all the Asian growth was Vietnamese. The Hispanic population also accelerated, and is estimated to be around 9%. The Black population is said to be around 31.2%, including a growing number of
West Indian,
Ghanaian and Nigerian immigrants. The foreign born population is said to be about 29%, a huge increase since 2000. South Philly's Italian population is large, and Italians are the ethnic group most often associated with the area. Philadelphias chapter of La Cosa Nostra (Italian Mafia) is also located in this section of Philadelphia
Transportation
Interstate 95 in Pennsylvania runs north and south through South Philadelphia and, in this area, provides commuters with access to Philadelphia International Airport, Interstate 76 (east), the sports complex, and the
Walt Whitman Bridge. The Girard Point Bridge section of I-95 crosses over the mouth of the
Schuylkill River, where it merges with the Delaware River.
Interstate 76 (east) becomes the Schuylkill Expressway at Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia and allows access between this section of the city and
University City, Pennsylvania, Center City Philadelphia,
30th Street Station, and the western suburbs.
In addition,
PA Route 291 serves as a major artery between the area and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, crossing the Schuylkill River via the Platt Bridge (named for Medal of Honor recipient George C. Platt). Broad Street (Philadelphia's equivalent of 14th St.) is also known as
